Victim-Compensation Expert to Speak at Dartmouth

Ken Feinberg, one of the nation’s leading experts in mediation and dispute resolution, will deliver the inaugural Roger S. Aaron ’64 TU ’65 Distinguished Lecture on Ethics in Law and Business at 4:30 p.m. on October 8 in the Hood Museum of Art Auditorium. The lecture is titled “Unconventional Responses to Financial Catastrophe: Tailoring the Law to Meet the Challenges.”

Feinberg is renowned for his handling of high-profile victim-compensation actions, including the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund and the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster victim-compensation fund. He has also managed compensations systems relating to the Aurora and Virginia Tech shootings and the Boston Marathon bombing.

The lecture is sponsored by Dartmouth’s Ethics Institute, a consortium of faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates who share an interest in applied and professional ethics.

“Many of our students plan to enter either the legal profession or business, so opportunities to explore the moral base of those fields is very important,” says Institute Director Aine Donovan. “Many faculty research projects focus on some aspect of business, ethics and/or law so we are interested in expanding the Aaron lectureship into the Tuck School of Business, the Geisel School of Medicine and Thayer School of Engineering, as well as Arts & Sciences.”

The lecture honors the legacy of the late Roger S. Aaron ’64, Tuck ’65, who helped orchestrate some of the biggest mergers of the past several decades, notably the unions of Exxon and Mobil and of Alcatel and Lucent. He also served as a top adviser to some of the country’s biggest corporations and was well known in the legal community as a person who considered ethics an essential part of one’s career.
